Understanding the Problem for Employers
According to the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), over seventy-seven percent (77%) of people who use illicit drugs or alcohol are employed. Employees who use drugs or alcohol are far more likely to be absent from work, cause accidents in the workplace, be less productive than their coworkers, and contribute to a poor working environment.

Substance Abuse In the Workplace
  • 22.5 million people (age 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse over the past year. Of these, 3.4 million were classified with dependence or abuse of both alcohol and illicit drugs (2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health)
  • The George Washington University Medical Center reports that alcohol costs employers $134 billion dollars in productivity losses, mainly due to absenteeism.
  • According to the National Mental Health Association, more than 90% of employees say that their mental health and personal problems have a direct impact on their job performance.
  • Employed drug abusers cost their employers about twice as much in medical and worker compensation claims as their drug free counterparts. (National Institute on Drug Abuse)
  • How Can CompCare Help?
Whether large or small, businesses are affected by substance abuse. In order for businesses to maintain their competitiveness in today's marketplace, employers must address the substance abuse issue head on. By establishing programs, such as CompCare's Substance Abuse Disease Management, employers can realize savings through increased productivity, reduced absenteeism and presenteeism, a bolstered workplace morale and reduced health costs.

Government programs face the challenge of addressing the access needs of all who seek care, while private sector employers also face a similar challenge. A study by the State of California found that the cost of rehabilitating an employee addicted to alcohol or other drugs was half of what the costs would be to fire that employee and hire and train a new person. CompCare's expertise in providing clinical support and interventions offers a solution that enhances the traditional approach to treating substance abuse.

    CompCare's Holistic Approach
Established in 1969, CompCare became a national leader in chemical dependency treatment services and management of inpatient psychiatric care. In 1992, Comprehensive Behavioral Care was formed as a full-service Managed Behavioral health organization. During the past 14 years, CompCare has managed over 1 million managed care lives with mental health and substance abuse benefits. Headquartered in Tampa, FL, CompCare is fully accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

CompCare's programs are centered on an integrated approach to care. Our belief is that effective, quality care stems from addressing medical, behavioral, and social issues. The "whole" individual is treated. Integration eliminates fragmented treatment, improves patient outcomes and minimizes costs that can occur as a result of wasteful overlaps or gaps in care. An integrated medical and behavioral approach is the foundation of our substance abuse disease management program.

Combining Hythiam's cutting-edge medical intervention, PROMETATM protocols, with our intensive clinical supports, we create a unique solution that addresses more than just the drug dependency.

    CompCare's Clinical Effectiveness
Our clinical supports have significantly impacted health outcomes. Vitality, emotional role, mental health, social functioning and mental composite score were all rated as improved when comparing pre and post 90-day scores, for those enrolled in high risk programs. In addition, annual behavioral health cost savings of over $10,000 per member enrolled in our program resulted after decreasing the average number of inpatient days per member. We combine this clinical expertise with PROMETATM Treatment Protocols to offer an exciting new approach in treating substance abuse and dependence.

Addiction - An Integrated Approach to Treatment
Addiction is a brain disease. The alterations in brain chemistry result in mood changes, altered memory process, and compromised motor skills. Commonly, addiction is categorized as either a medical condition or a behavioral condition, but rarely as a combination of both. The most effective treatment for substance abuse integrates the medical and behavioral components of addiction, and incorporates many treatment approaches ranging from medication to therapy to social supports.

CompCare's Substance Abuse Disease Management approach echoes NIDA's principles of treating the whole person. By combining cutting edge medical intervention with biopsychosocial supports and managed care technology, we offer a fully integrated treatment approach that optimizes outcomes. Specialized outreach telephonically or in person, crisis intervention, and same day appointments when needed provide the necessary support to ensure all barriers to care are eliminated. Transportation, medical care, housing, respite care, food, and prescriptions are all addressed to ensure a fully successful treatment process. In addition, multidisciplinary teams coordinate to provide support, referrals and treatment planning based on the individual's needs.

What are the PROMETA Treatment Protocols?

  • Two Protocols-PROMETATM for Alcohol Dependence; PROMETATM for Stimulant Dependence
  • Designed to address neurochemical imbalances and provide nutritional supplementation
  • May be used in all stages of recovery and can complement existing treatments

    Program Steps
      1. Assess and Address
      2. Medical Treatment Interventions
      3. Psychosocial Support and Interventions
      4. Re-integration

To ensure optimal results, the program not only addresses the individual's drug or alcohol use, but also addresses any associated medical, psychological, and social issues. The elements of CompCare's DM Program are centered on a holistic treatment approach to bring the individual back into the community and help improve the person's living, working, and recreational environment.

Step 1:  During the first call, specialized clinicians assess and address short-term and long-term recovery needs.

Step 2:  Hythiam's PROMETATM Protocols, medical treatment interventions, help to jump-start rehabilitation by:

  • Resetting neuro-receptors to pre-drug exposures
  • Reducing or eliminating cravings
  • Increasing mental clarity

Step 3:  CompCare's psychosocial supports and interventions continue throughout the recovery process to achieve maximum outcomes and treatment compliance. Interventions include:

  • Traditional substance abuse outpatient therapy
  • Psychiatry and/or therapy to address co-occurring substance abuse/mental health disorders
  • Primary care for health issues, with special attention to high-correlating co-occurring disorders.
  • Identification and coordination of medical issues impacting treatment planning
  • Identification and elimination of barriers including transportation issues, housing, respite care, food and prescriptions

Step 4:  The focus is on reintegration back in to the community, so that the person may achieve a healthy living, working, and recreational environment.
