Substance Abuse In the Workplace
22.5 million people (age 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse over the past year. Of these, 3.4 million were classified with dependence or abuse of both alcohol and illicit drugs (2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health)
The George Washington University Medical Center reports that alcohol costs employers $134 billion dollars in productivity losses, mainly due to absenteeism.
According to the National Mental Health Association, more than 90% of employees say that their mental health and personal problems have a direct impact on their job performance.

Addiction - An Integrated Approach to Treatment
Addiction is a brain disease. The alterations in brain chemistry result in mood changes, altered memory process, and compromised motor skills. Commonly, addiction is categorized as either a medical condition or a behavioral condition, but rarely as a combination of both. The most effective treatment for substance abuse integrates the medical and behavioral components of addiction, and incorporates many treatment approaches ranging from medication to therapy to social supports.
